Western Red Cedar offers a variety of colours from red to brown, yellow and pink. Cedar is slow grown, naturally durable and has one of the longest life spans of any North American softwood. It produces long lengths of clear timber with true, straight grain and is known for its naturally occurring resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage. Cedar is lightweight, easy to finish, stain and work with. Its natural durability, dimensional stability and exceptional beauty make Western Red Cedar ideal for exterior cladding.

Durability
Western Red Cedar is one of the world’s most durable species. With natural resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage, Cedar remains the premier choice for timber cladding. Fibres in the timber contain natural preservatives that are toxic to decay-causing fungi. Cedars durability is class 2, which is classed as ‘durable’.
Dimensional Stability
Cedar is hygroscopic and will absorb or discharge moisture to attain equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere, however, it has a very low shrinkage factor and has a high level of resistance to warping.
Workability
Western Red Cedar produces long lightweight lengths of timber with a fine straight grain making this specie easy to cut, saw, machine and fix.
Fixing
Cedar takes most fasteners without splitting and is easily nailed. We would advise using high quality stainless steel fixings to prevent discolouration and movement.
Coatings and Treatments
Due to the low density composition of cedar it is one of the best species available for accepting paints, stains, oils and various treatments including Contra-Burn® fire retardant.
Weathering
Cedar will weather to a silver grey colour if left untreated over a period of time.
Certification
Western Red Cedar is UKTR and EUTR compliant and can be offered as PEFC certified.
