Siberian Larch is a very resinous wood making it durable and ideal for external cladding. The clearly defined annual rings create attractive figuring. The colour of Siberian Larch can vary from a dark brown to a pale yellow. Larch is very slow grown and has a high durability factor for a softwood species. Due to its high density, Larch cladding is perfect for public access projects such as schools or shopping complexes where impact may occur.
Appearance:
Consistent colour: creamy yellow brown. Slowly grown with tight straight grain. distinct grain pattern. Fine texture. Live inter-grown knots similar to those in pine.
Durability Classification:
Durable - in cladding use, Class 3. Service life 50-100 years. Timber contains natural fungicide arabinogalactan.
Density:
High. 660-750 kg/m3 at 18% moisture content
Dimensional Stability:
Good
Hardness:
High: 1,100 lb/in2 on Janka Scale (Redwood is 480lb/in2)
Grades:
Unsorted (I-III)
Sawfalling (I-IV)
Dimensions:
Sawn Boards before machining:
Thickness: 25mm - 100mm
Widths: 75mm - 200mm
Lengths: 3.0m and 4.0m +
Finishing:
Accepts application of stains and paints and Contra-Burn® fire retardant
Working Properties:
Can be sawn and planed with standard woodworking equipment. Pre-drilling for fixing location is recommended
Fixing:
Austenitic stainless steel fixings are recommended
We offer a standard range along with bespoke profiles.
All of our profiles are offered planed as standard, unless otherwise stated.
Durability
Larch is a class 3 durability rated product, which is moderately durable but can be treated to increase lifespan.
Dimensional Stability
Larch will absorb and discharge moisture to reach equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere and although fairly stable, can be prone to warping and shrinkage if not correctly acclimatised before application. Larch has a movement rating of medium.
Workability
Larch can be machined to achieve a high quality finish, but due to the density of the product regular sharpening of the blades is recommended.
Fixing
It is suggested that screwing instead of nailing is preferable to avoid splitting.
Coatings and Treatments
Due to the density of larch, a high-quality surface coating can be applied. We would recommend a factory finish to ensure an even colour as site application onto larch can cause colour variances due to the density variations between different sections. Larch can also be treated with standard treatment products and Contra-Burn® fire retardant system.
Weathering
Larch will weather to a grey colour if left untreated over a period of time.
Certification
Siberian Larch EUTR and UKTR complaint and can be offered as FSC certified.
